Top Interview Mistakes

Top 3 Interview Mistakes. Honestly I feel there isn’t “one” top interview mistake. We’re all human and nobody’s perfect. I’m sure there are near perfect interviews done, but there’s usually something that doesn’t go the way you expected. I will mention the top three interview mistakes that I feel are bad to make in an interview.

Being on Time. Arriving to the interview should be a priority. If you come too early or too late it shows how important the job is to you. For example, if you’re late you make the interviewer(s) wait longer than they should and it makes them feel that you don’t care about being on time for your job. If you arrive too early it makes you look like you are trying too hard and the staff and interviewers might not feel comfortable because they might not be ready or set up for interviewing. Most employers prefer you to arrive 10-15 minutes early (YouTube, 2014). If you’re going to be late let them know in advance and they should be able to work something out.

Clothing. We hear stories all the time about how people don’t dress appropriately for the interview. Some people wearing pajamas, street clothes, dirty, smelly, etc. Then you have people who dress like they are strippers or going to a party. Hair also goes with the clothing. Some people come in without shaving or their hair isn’t clean and groomed properly. My advice would be “dress to impress.” Wear clean clothes that are iron pressed (YouTube, 2014). A suit and tie for the guys with dress shoes. For the ladies, a dress that isn’t too revealing with comfortable business-type low-heeled shoes. For men and woman, come in clean-shaved with a clean and nicely groomed hair style.

Come Prepared. In order to pass the interview to the next level of the hiring process, I would say that communication is key. If you don’t know what to talk about or who you’re talking to, you could end up showing some nervous habits such as verbal tics, talking too much, and/or talking too little (YouTube, 2014). Know the employer and the position you are applying for. Have your resume on hand with some questions for the interviewers which concern you. This will help when they ask you questions about your past experience and some of your questions may be answered in the process of the interview.
